Clinic Research Integration
Clinic Research Integration Hub: The mission of the hub is to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and cultivate reciprocal relationships between MIDB research and clinic teams. By increasing accessibility and awareness across clinic and research, we aim to advance our collective knowledge of neurodevelopment and drive impactful innovations in healthcare.

Examples of Our Engagement
Phlebotomy
Located on the first floor of MIDB, pediatric phlebotomy and laboratory services are available for research participants. The lab consists of an exam room, restroom, and specimen processing room. On-site specimen storage is available at temperatures of 4.4C, -20C, and -80C and same-day courier services for off-site processing are also available. MIDB provides staff support to assist with specimen collection and processing as needed by study teams.
Child Family Life
Participants who come to the MIDB in person for assessment or intervention visits may access Child Life services if appropriate and available. Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS) provide developmental and coping support to promote patient and family-centered care. Our CCLSs utilize many modalities to support children and families including sometimes a facility dog, who is a trained assistance dog. Our CCLSs assess with the child, family, and study staff if integrating child life services into the intervention will support the child's and family’s needs and goals. Some examples of ways a CCLS and, sometimes, facility dog might be involved in study visits include:
- Meeting a child and family in the lobby to build rapport, normalize the environment, and further assess individual needs
- Motivating movement, supporting transitions, and modeling participation in the study engagement
- Providing alternate focus and sensory support or other identified coping supports during a procedure or other stressful experience
- Modeling social interactions such as playing ball, cleaning up toys together, and gentle pressure to facilitate co-regulation
- Working with the study team to develop visual supports and preparation materials to help the child understand what will happen during their participation in the study (e.g., what the MIDB space looks like, what they will be asked to do, etc.).
Behavior Response Team
MIDB’s Behavior Response Team (BRT) consists of MIDB staff and faculty formally trained on de-escalation, crisis prevention, and intervention. BRT members have worked extensively with individuals with challenging behaviors, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. BRT members meet weekly to practice response strategies to keep skills fresh and troubleshoot potential complexities of our space and patient population. The BRT collaborates with providers and researchers to plan and support patient and participant visits.
Rates and Support
Direct Phlebotomy Support for Research Studies
$19.08 per blood draw
Our research phlebotomist will complete draws and/or oversee study personnel completing draws with participants.
Please note: For projects with a large sample size of participants may be appropriate for an FTE model of support.
Phlebotomy Training Sessions for Research Personnel
$108.66 per session
Our phlebotomy training consists of a 1-Hour session(s). Research teams can request as many sessions as appropriate for the trainee(s). Up to two coordinators can attend a session which includes phlebotomist shadowing and hands-on practice with volunteers. Training sessions will be tailored to the population of the research study and include developmentally appropriate techniques proven to facilitate higher rates of success. Training phlebotomy materials are included.
Please note: Trainees DO NOT receive a formal phlebotomy certification through this training.
